I’m a huge consumer of audiobooks. I’ve listened to hundreds of books over the past five years that I wouldn’t have had time to read. When I did my taxes one year, I realized I’d spent more than $600 on audiobooks. All of them were from Audible.com, but it’s not the only audiobook service: Audiobooks.com and Chirp.com are great alternatives. Maybe the best option is a Spotify Premium account. It’s $11.99 a month, and you get access to their complete music catalog as well as 15 hours of audiobook listening each month. Its library may not be as complete as other audiobook platforms’, but it has a strong selection that includes new releases as well as older titles.
The key to an audiobook is the narrator. A narrator can turn an engrossing read or page-turner into a painful listening experience. There have been several books that I loved reading but couldn’t bear listening to because the narrator was akin to nails on a chalkboard.
There are so many different types of narrators. It doesn’t matter whether they’re female or male, how old they are, whether they’re gruff or elegant, or whether they have an accent. It seems to me that the best audiobook narrators have a subtlety to them and a gift for picking up on the intricacies of a story and its characters.
One of my favorite things to do is search for audiobooks by narrator. I’ve found a number of gems this way. Here are a few of my favorite audiobooks.
I will say that narrators sometimes excel at particular genres, such as mysteries, history, young adult, and so on. Below are some of the best audiobook narrators and some of the most popular books they’ve narrated.
